The Battles of Coxinga

Chikamatsu Monzaemon · 1715 CE · Play · Japanese · Enlightenment

Watōnai, born at Hirado to a banished Ming officer and a Japanese woman, crosses to a China the Tartars have overrun and sets about raising a loyalist army for a court that has already fallen. His Chinese half-sister is married to a general whose allegiance is undecided, and the alliance turns on what she and her stepmother are each willing to give up to make it binding. Loosely built on the career of Zheng Chenggong, it ran seventeen months without a break at the Takemoto theatre, the longest run the puppet stage has had.
