Miau

Benito Pérez Galdós · 1888 CE · Novel · Spanish · Victorian

Ramón Villaamil, sacked from the ministry two months short of his pension, walks the offices of Madrid every morning to beg for reinstatement while the three women at home, nicknamed the Miaus for their cat faces, keep up appearances on nothing at all. His grandson drifts half-starved through school and talks to God in the intervals. Galdós turned the machinery of Spanish officialdom into a domestic tragedy with a face painted on it.
