Torquemada at the Stake

Benito Pérez Galdós · 1889 CE · Novel · Spanish · Victorian

Francisco Torquemada has lent money to the poor of Madrid at ruinous rates for thirty years without a flicker of pity, and now his son Valentín, a boy who does mathematics like a miracle, is gravely ill. The usurer sets about buying heaven, distributing coins and cloaks in the street with exactly the arithmetic he used to squeeze them out of it. First of four short books following the moneylender upward through Spanish society, and the one Galdós compressed hardest.
