Nazarín

Benito Pérez Galdós · 1895 CE · Novel · Spanish · Victorian

A slum priest in Madrid gives away everything he owns, loses his parish and walks out into the villages of La Mancha with two women who attach themselves to him, taking whatever bread and beatings the road provides. The constables read his literal Christianity as vagrancy, and everyone else reads it as madness. Galdós set a Quixote in a cassock against a country with no place left for either, and opened his late spiritual phase with it.
