Doña Perfecta

Benito Pérez Galdós · 1876 CE · Novel · Spanish · Victorian

A young engineer arrives from Madrid at the cathedral town of Orbajosa to survey a mining concession and to marry the cousin his family has chosen, and finds his aunt, her confessor and the whole town closing against everything his education stands for. The courtship becomes a siege fought with pieties, rumours and small refusals rather than arguments. Galdós's first openly polemical book fixed the terms of Spain's long quarrel between clerical province and liberal capital.
