Quincas Borba
A provincial schoolmaster inherits a fortune from a mad philosopher on condition that he keep the man's dog, which bears the philosopher's own name, and moves to Rio carrying a doctrine called Humanitism that proves all suffering to be the winner's dinner. A married couple attach themselves to him and begin managing his money and his illusions. The dog watches everything.
