Midnight Mass
A seventeen-year-old lodger sitting up to catch the two o'clock Christmas service is joined in the parlour by his landlady, who talks about the theatre, her husband's absences and the shape of her own mouth, in a conversation that never once names what it is doing. Years afterward the man recounts the hour, still not naming it. Nothing happens, twice over.
