Light and Darkness

Natsume Sōseki · 1916 CE · Novel · Japanese · Modernist

Tsuda goes into hospital for a minor operation and comes out into a mesh of small obligations: a wife whose spending he cannot govern, a sister who despises her, a patron's wife who manages everyone. Money moves between households in envelopes while nobody states what the money is for. Sōseki was writing it daily for the newspaper when he died, and it stands as the most sustained psychological realism in Japanese.
