The Gate
Sōsuke and Oyone keep house at the foot of a cliff in Tokyo on a clerk's salary, childless and careful with each other, because they came together in a way that cost him his studies and his friends. When the man they wronged is about to reappear, Sōsuke goes up to a Zen temple in Kamakura to ask to be let through. The quietest of Sōseki's novels, and the last panel of the trilogy.
