The House of Bernarda Alba

Federico García Lorca · 1945 CE · Play · Spanish · Modernist

The day her second husband is buried, Bernarda Alba shuts her five unmarried daughters into eight years of mourning and closes the house against an Andalusian village that talks about everything. The eldest has money of her own and a young man engaged to her; the youngest is twenty, unresigned, and knows whose window he stands at once the street is dark. Lorca finished it two months before he was shot outside Granada, and it went unstaged until Margarita Xirgu opened it in Buenos Aires in 1945.
