Mitro Marjani
Mitro is the middle daughter-in-law of a Punjabi joint family and says out loud, in the courtyard, the thing the household's whole arrangement depends on nobody saying: that she wants more than her husband gives her and does not propose to be ashamed of it. Her mother-in-law calculates, her husband strikes her, the other wives watch their own footing, and a visit to Mitro's own mother turns up a history that explains nothing and settles less. Sobti put a woman's appetite into Hindi prose in a colloquial, deliberately unliterary register that critics attacked and younger writers copied.
