Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías

Federico García Lorca · 1935 CE · Poem · Spanish · Modernist

Four movements for a bullfighter gored at Manzanares in the summer of 1934, the first fixing an hour — five in the afternoon — and repeating it under the basket of lime, the sheets, the ice and the crowd until the phrase becomes a bell. The second refuses to look at the blood on the sand, the third lays the body out on cold stone, the fourth speaks to a man no longer there. Written by a friend who had watched him fight.
