Poet in New York

Federico García Lorca · 1940 CE · Poem · Spanish · Modernist

Written across a year at Columbia after a collapse, ten sections move from a childhood countryside into a metropolis of buried rivers, wire, arithmetic and slaughtered animals, with sequences set in Harlem and at Wall Street. The idiom breaks with the Andalusian ballads: no rhyme, no folk measure, surrealist images, and an ode addressed to Walt Whitman among the sleepers. It stayed unpublished until four years after Lorca was killed.
