Troy Maxson hauls garbage in Pittsburgh in 1957 and was a home-run hitter in the Negro Leagues back when the major leagues were shut to him. He blocks his son Cory from a football scholarship, tells the same story about wrestling Death, and is slow to finish the fence his wife Rose asked him to build. Wilson's Pulitzer winner is the most performed of the cycle, and Troy the part American actors measure themselves against.
