Bavarian Gentians

D. H. Lawrence · 1932 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Not every man has gentians in his house in soft September, at slow sad Michaelmas, and the speaker asks the dark blue flowers to be torches for him — blue giving off darkness rather than light. He wants them to lead him down the darker and darker stairs of the descent where a bride is a gone-away bride and the god is invisible in his own blue gloom. Left in the notebooks at Bandol and printed after his death in the Last Poems.
