La Celestina

Fernando de Rojas · 1499 CE · Novel · Spanish · Renaissance

A young nobleman follows his hawk into a walled garden, finds Melibea there and is refused, and his servants put him on to an old bawd who mends maidenheads, sells cosmetics and knows how to talk. She takes the commission and a gold chain for it, and the servants who found her want their share. Twenty-one acts of nothing but dialogue, read ever since as the hinge between medieval allegory and modern prose fiction.
