Nights of Cabiria
A prostitute working the waste ground at the edge of Rome is pushed into the Tiber by her boyfriend for her handbag, hauled out by strangers, and goes back to work insisting she is fine. Over a run of nights she is picked up by a film star, joins a pilgrimage to beg for a different life, and is hypnotised before a laughing hall. Giulietta Masina's clown face carried Fellini's second consecutive foreign-language Oscar.
