Dodsworth

Sinclair Lewis · 1929 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Sam Dodsworth sells the Zenith motor company he spent his life building and takes his wife to Europe, where the first leisure he has ever had exposes how little the marriage is holding. She chases a continental life and younger admirers while he wanders from London to Paris to Berlin, discovering that an American manufacturer abroad is neither the barbarian his hosts assume nor the man his wife now wants. The most sympathetic portrait Lewis ever gave the businessman he had spent a decade satirising.
