Babbitt

Sinclair Lewis · 1922 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

George F. Babbitt sells real estate in Zenith, a booming Midwestern city, and measures his life by his sleeping porch, his car, his club luncheons and the opinions he takes from the morning paper. When the one friend who thinks for himself is disgraced, and a mistress and a set of liberal acquaintances come within reach, he tries out rebellion at forty-six. Lewis's portrait of business-class conformity gave the language a common noun and helped bring him the first American Nobel in literature.
