Arrowsmith

Sinclair Lewis · 1925 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Martin Arrowsmith trains under an exacting German-born bacteriologist at the University of Winnemac and then works his way through country practice, a public health office and a commercial research institute, finding at every stop that science is subordinate to money, boosters and publicity. A plague outbreak in the West Indies gives him his first chance to run a properly controlled trial, and the cost of running it properly is counted in lives. Written with the bacteriologist Paul de Kruif; Lewis refused the Pulitzer it was awarded.
