Sun Stone

Octavio Paz · 1957 CE · Poem · Latin American · Contemporary

Five hundred and eighty-four unrhymed hendecasyllables running as one unbroken sentence, counting out the days of the Venus cycle carved on the Aztec calendar stone and coming back around to the six lines it began with. A remembered woman, a Madrid street under bombardment in 1937, and the whole weight of Mexican history pass through the same turning circuit. Generally taken as the central poem of Paz's career.
