Salamander

Octavio Paz · 1962 CE · Poem · Latin American · Contemporary

Poems from Paris and Mexico at the turn of the sixties, named for the creature supposed to live in fire and, in its Mexican form the axolotl, for Xolotl, the twin of Quetzalcoatl who escapes his sacrifice by changing shape. The lines break shorter here, the blank page starts being used as space rather than margin, and Aztec material enters the vocabulary for good. It turns Paz toward the experiments the later books carry through.
