The Street of Crocodiles
A boy in a Galician provincial town watches his father abandon the family textile shop for the attic, where he breeds exotic birds, lectures the household on the secret ambitions of matter and the dignity of tailors' dummies, and by degrees stops keeping his own shape. The servant Adela governs the rooms with a single gesture, the calendar swells to admit a thirteenth counterfeit month, and a shabby new commercial quarter grows at the edge of town in cheap imitation of a metropolis. Schulz taught drawing in Drohobycz all his working life and published two slim books, of which this was the first.
