Freedom on Parole
Poems written between 1935 and 1947 by a young Mexican who had been to Spain during its civil war and come home unsure what a poem was for, gathered under a phrase that treats language itself as a prisoner let out on conditions. Solitude, the body, the instant that will not hold still; the diction is spare and the quarrel is with words. The volume Paz kept reopening and rebuilding for twenty years.
