The Grapes of Wrath
Tom Joad comes off parole to find the Oklahoma farm tractored under and the family loading a truck for California on the strength of a handbill promising picking work. Route 66, the roadside camps, the growers' associations and one clean government camp follow each other as the money runs out and Ma holds what is left of the family together. Nunnally Johnson's script keeps much of Steinbeck's talk, Gregg Toland lit the migrant camps almost entirely out of darkness, and Zanuck released it while counties in California were still banning the book.
