Still Life

Jia Zhangke · 2006 CE · Film · Chinese · Contemporary

A miner arrives in an old Yangtze town being knocked down ahead of the Three Gorges flood, looking for the wife who left with their daughter sixteen years earlier. On the same waterline a nurse is looking for a husband she has not seen in two years, while crews strip the buildings by hand and painted marks show how high the water will come. Jia took the Golden Lion for it in 2006, and it is now the usual starting point for accounts of Chinese cinema after the Fifth Generation.
