Death and Life of a Severino

João Cabral de Melo Neto · 1955 CE · Poem · Latin American · Contemporary

Severino leaves the drought-cracked backlands of Pernambuco and walks down the Capibaribe toward Recife, where he has been told a man can still get a living. Every stop on the road turns out to be a burial — a dead field hand, a body carried in a hammock, gravediggers arguing over plot sizes — and the cane country he crosses proves no better fed than the sertão he left. Cast as a Pernambucan Christmas auto in the seven-syllable line of cordel pamphlets, it is the most staged and most memorised work in modern Brazil.
