Divided Heaven

Christa Wolf · 1963 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

Recovering in a sanatorium after collapsing between two wagons at the railway works where she was training, a young East German woman goes back over the two years she spent with a chemist whose research kept being turned down. He crossed to West Berlin in the summer of 1961 and asked her to follow, and she went to see him there. The book that made Wolf's name in the GDR and set off a public argument about how a socialist book could be written.
