Cassandra

Christa Wolf · 1983 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

Waiting in a cart before the lion gate at Mycenae, brought back as a war prize, a daughter of Priam goes over how the city talked itself into war: the palace hardening into a security apparatus, her own priesthood, and the women keeping a life going in the caves by the Scamander. She had refused a god and been given a gift nobody would credit. Wolf took the frame from Aeschylus and wrote it against the Euromissile deployments of the eighties.
