No Place on Earth

Christa Wolf · 1979 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

At a tea party on the Rhine in 1804 two writers who never met are put in the same room: Heinrich von Kleist, back from a collapse in Mainz, and the poet Karoline von Guenderrode, who publishes under a man's name. The talk goes round the table about tariffs and Goethe while the two find a window and each other's refusals. Wolf assembled the encounter from their own letters and writing, in the year her circle broke up over the Biermann affair.
