Accident

Christa Wolf · 1987 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

On a spring day in 1986 a woman in a German village weeds her garden, cooks and takes calls with the radio on as the news out of Chernobyl is revised hour by hour. Her brother is on an operating table that same day having a tumour taken from his brain, and she follows the surgery in her mind as the bulletins list what may no longer be eaten. Wolf wrote it within weeks of the reactor fire; it is her most direct book on what science is permitted.
