Two strangers, Martín and Ángel, share a long train journey and a bottle of each region's wine, and their stories come out in conversation. Martín has loved a Maghrebi woman, and the young Asturian Ángel was drawn into an Islamist plot he barely understood, with the date of the 2004 Madrid train bombings hanging over his account. The first novel of a director better known for film, it won the Premio Herralde for its treatment of Spain's cultural collision with the Islamic world.
