Shoah

Claude Lanzmann · 1985 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

Across nine and a half hours Lanzmann questions survivors, Polish villagers who farmed beside the camps, and former German officials filmed with a hidden camera, refusing every frame of archive footage. The sites appear only as they look now: open fields at Treblinka, a quiet clearing at Chelmno, rail lines running out into grass. The refusal of reconstruction became the standard argument about how atrocity may and may not be represented.
