Medea

Christa Wolf · 1996 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

Eleven voices circle a Colchian exile living in Corinth, among them Jason, the king's astronomer, a priest and two of her own pupils, as she finds the bones of a royal child under the palace and learns what the city was founded on. Corinth wants someone to carry its plague and guilt, and a foreign healer with a following is convenient. Wolf sets it against Euripides, returning to the older tradition that does not make Medea her children's killer.
