Returning to Haifa
When the crossings open after June 1967 a couple drive from Ramallah to Haifa and up the stairs of the flat they ran from in April 1948, where their furniture is still in place and someone else answers the door. In the confusion at the port they had left an infant son behind. The most argued-over of Kanafani's fictions, it puts a Palestinian and an Israeli claim on the same rooms into a single conversation.
