The Land of Sad Oranges
A family driving north out of Jaffa in 1948 stops at the Lebanese border with what it could carry, and a child watches the adults work out that the road back has closed behind them. The oranges they brought out of the groves sit shrivelling in the rooms they end up in. Written when Kanafani was in his mid-twenties, it fixed the orange as the standing image of Palestinian dispossession.
