Umm Saad
A woman from the camps calls on a writer in the city between errands, and across a run of these visits tells him about her son leaving for the fedayeen, her husband's silence and the price of bread. She brings him a vine cutting and instructions for planting it. Assembled from sketches Kanafani ran in al-Hadaf, it is his one book built entirely out of a working-class woman's speech.
