The Financial Expert
Margayya works out of a tin box under the banyan tree facing the Malgudi Co-operative Bank, filling in loan forms for peasants who cannot read them and taking a cut for knowing which line to sign. A prescribed propitiation of Lakshmi, a scandalous manuscript pressed on him by an author with no other buyer, and a son he cannot refuse carry him up into real money and the deference that comes with it. Narayan's tightest comic construction, built entirely on one man's relation to money.
