Waiting for the Mahatma
Sriram is twenty, lives off his grandmother's savings, and joins the independence movement because a girl collecting for Gandhi's fund walks down his street. Volunteering leads to a spinning wheel, a hut on a hill, slogan-painting, sabotage he only half understands and a term in jail, while the Mahatma moves through the book issuing mild and unanswerable instructions. Narayan's one book with a historical figure in it, kept at exactly the distance the comedy needs.
