Darkness
A dream that was not all a dream: the bright sun is extinguished, the stars wander darkling in eternal space, and men burn their palaces, their thrones and their forests for an hour's light. Famine works through the cities and the camps, war flares and dies out for want of anything to take, and the few who last turn on whatever they had once fed or worshipped. Written in the volcanic summer of 1816, when the ash of Tambora had blackened European skies and snow fell in June.
