Beppo

Lord Byron · 1818 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

A Venetian merchant's wife, left alone for years after his ship fails to come back, settles into the entirely recognised arrangement of a cavalier servente, and carnival Venice sees nothing whatever wrong with it. At the ridotto a stranger in Turkish habit watches her all evening and then follows the couple home. Byron's first poem in the loose Italian ottava rima he took from Frere's Whistlecraft, which the corpus does not hold, and the trial run for the manner he wrote in from then on.
