The Vision of Judgment
Saint Peter sits dozing at the gate with his keys rusted from disuse when the funeral of George the Third arrives and Satan comes up to contest the soul with the Archangel Michael. Witnesses are summoned out of the whole reign — Wilkes, the anonymous Junius, and a vast cloud of Britons and Americans — and the hearing is going badly for the crown when a poet laureate is dropped into the middle of it and starts to read aloud. Written to demolish Robert Southey's own vision of the same king's apotheosis, which the corpus does not hold; publishing it without Byron's preface cost John Hunt a prosecution.
