The Prisoner of Chillon

Lord Byron · 1816 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

Six sons of a man who died for his faith are chained each to his own pillar in a dungeon sunk below the surface of Lake Geneva, and the eldest tells what became of the others. He learns to know each brother by the sound of his chain, scoops a grave in the stone floor with his hands, and at last works his way up to the barred window and the small green island with three tall trees. Byron wrote it in two days at Ouchy, having toured the castle and taken the outline from the imprisonment of François Bonivard.
