Barchester Towers

Anthony Trollope · 1857 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

The old bishop dies and his successor arrives with a domineering wife and a low-church chaplain who intends to run the diocese himself. The cathedral clergy close ranks, a garden party at Ullathorne throws every faction together, and Harding's widowed daughter finds three men competing for her hand and her late husband's money. The most read of the Barsetshire books, and the one where Trollope's comedy of ecclesiastical politics is fully formed.
