Doctor Thorne

Anthony Trollope · 1858 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

The Greshams of Greshamsbury are mortgaged to a railway contractor who began as a stonemason on their own land, and their son is told plainly that he must marry money. He wants instead the village doctor's niece, whose birth the county will not discuss and whose uncle knows exactly whose child she is. The plot came from Trollope's brother Thomas Adolphus, and the book outsold everything else he wrote.
