The Last Chronicle of Barset

Anthony Trollope · 1867 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

The perpetual curate of Hogglestock, too poor to keep his children in shoes and too proud to be helped, cannot say where he got the cheque for twenty pounds he paid to his butcher, and the magistrates commit him for trial. His daughter is engaged to the archdeacon's son, so the whole diocese has a stake in the answer. Trollope thought it the best novel he wrote, and closed Barsetshire with it.
