The Persians

Aeschylus · 472 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

In the Persian capital the queen mother and the elders of Susa wait for word of Xerxes' expedition against Greece, and a runner brings the account of the sea fight at Salamis. The ghost of Darius is raised from his tomb to read his son's defeat as the wage of hubris. The earliest surviving work of European drama, and the only Greek tragedy to take recent history rather than myth for its subject.
