The Suppliants
Fifty daughters of Danaus put in at Argos in flight from forced marriage to their Egyptian cousins and beg the king for asylum at the altars of the city. Pelasgus must weigh the sacrilege of turning suppliants away against a war his people have no cause to want, while the women press him with the threat of hanging themselves on the sanctuary images. The opening play of a lost trilogy, and one whose choral bulk long made it look like the oldest tragedy in existence until a papyrus fixed its date.
