Beware, Soul Brother

Chinua Achebe · 1971 CE · Poem · Nigerian · Contemporary

Poems out of the Biafran war and its aftermath: a refugee mother combing her son's hair in a camp where the smell of diarrhoea has settled, a pair of vultures nesting in a roadside gully, a soldier's widow given a form to sign. The title poem tells the dancers not to lose the ground under their feet while the drums are still going, because the ground is what is being taken. Achebe published almost no fiction for twenty years after the war, and this is what the silence produced instead.
