Over one season at Indian Mound Downs, a down-at-heel West Virginia racetrack in the 1970s, four horses are run in claiming races by trainers, grooms and hangers-on all hoping for one lucky payday. Tommy Hansel and his girlfriend Maggie arrive with a scheme to switch the horses. It won the 2010 National Book Award, to general surprise, as a small-press book.
